MATT EVANS

About me

Matt Evans is a Chartered Landscape Architect, Garden designer, Photographer, and passionate Plantsman based in Bath. He creates distinctive, gardens that celebrate a deep love of plants and encourage a meaningful connection with the landscape. Working across a broad range of scales—from compact urban townhouses to expansive countryside estates—Matt’s designs are defined by thoughtful detail, strong spatial composition, and plant-led design. His work has been featured in Gardens Illustrated Magazine, and he was named their “One to Watch in 2025.”

At the heart of Matt's design philosophy is a deep sensitivity to the atmosphere of a place. Drawing on principles of photography—such as depth and balance—he crafts outdoor spaces that are not only functional but also artful in their composition.

Matt’s connection with the natural world is rooted in his childhood memories of picking wild strawberries and exploring his garden. These early experiences shaped his plant-led approach to design, which combines years of experience growing rare and unusual plants—many of which are uncommon in cultivation. Matt challenges convention by using plants that are not only beautiful but also carry a forgotten history of medicinal or edible use.

With over 10 years experience in landscape design, Matt has worked on projects of all scales, from urban townhouses and countryside estates to public realm regeneration. Having worked with renowned garden designer Arne Maynard, he has worked on designs for some of the world’s finest gardens and lead projects across the UK, Europe and the Americas.

At home, Matt continues to explore and refine planting ideas on his two allotment plots in Bath, where he has developed both a woodland garden and a gravel garden. He regularly attends training days at specialist nurseries and works with fellow designers to further develop his horticultural knowledge and design approach.

Matt takes pride in working closely with clients to create gardens that are truly personal. His strong connections with specialist nurseries, craftspeople, and suppliers ensure that each project is completed to the highest quality.
