THE KINGS COW, HENLEY ON THAMES
A new kitchen garden for a Modern British inn, nestled in the heart of the Chilterns and driven by a genuine farm-to-fork ethos. The kitchen is led by Head Chef Charlie Jeffreys, a former MasterChef: The Professionals contestant who honed his craft at the three Michelin-starred Dorchester,
The aim was to create a productive garden that naturally evolved from the character of the surrounding landscape. Fruit, herbs and seasonal produce are combined with reclaimed materials and handcrafted details, creating a strong connection to the place.
Woven between the productive beds a series of outdoor dining spaces provide an immersive setting where guests can experience the landscape and food together.

Part of that ambition was to shape the approach to the inn. New heritage pear trees frame views towards the oak-framed walk-in fruit cage, offering a first glimpse of the productive landscape beyond and drawing on the rich orchard heritage of the Chilterns.
The planting has been carefully composed, bringing together forgotten perennial vegetables, heritage annuals, culinary herbs and fruiting shrubs, all selected to contribute directly to the kitchen, led by Head Chef Charlie Jeffreys.
Between the productive beds, a series of outdoor dining spaces allows guests to experience the landscape and food together.
The garden evolved through a close collaboration with Mike Spink, Charlie Jeffreys and Ryan Alexander Associates, allowing ideas to be explored from different perspectives and refined throughout the process, with a shared focus on creating something that felt authentic to the place.
